5 Cable Line Problems That Actually Start With the Masterbatch

In XLPE, XLPO, PE, Solar and E-Beam cable extrusion, many manufacturers troubleshoot machines, screws, or temperature profiles when something goes wrong.

But in many cases, the real issue starts much earlier.

It starts with the masterbatch.

Here are five common cable line problems that are often caused by poor masterbatch quality.

1. Specks in Insulation

One of the most common complaints in XLPE and PE cable insulation.

Typical causes include:

  • Poor dispersion in the plastic masterbatch
  • Contamination during masterbatch manufacturing
  • Unstable pigments in colour masterbatch systems
Result: insulation defects and cable rejection.

2. Colour Streaks During Extrusion

When pigments are not properly dispersed in plastic colour masterbatch, colour streaks appear during extrusion.

This is especially visible in:

  • Solar cable insulation
  • PE cable jackets
  • Infrastructure cable sheathing
